'Doctor Mike' as he is known on City Talk is actually Mr Michael Scott MB, ChB, FRCS, ChM.

He is the senior Consultant General Surgeon at Whiston and St Helens Hospitals.

Mike, as he likes to be known, has been around Merseyside since 1973 when at the age of 18 he started his studies at Liverpool Medical School. He qualified in 1978.

Much of Mike's surgical training took place in and around Merseyside and Chester but he did spend just over 3 years working in Southern California in the mid 1980's.

As a General Surgeon Mike operates on most parts of the human body but particularly specialises in treating bowel complaints, and also all types of hernia surgery.

Mike is married to Julie and lives on the Wirral with their 3 children and a veritable menagerie of animals!

Listeners may recognise Mike's voice from the 5 years that he worked on daytime TV's This Morning show with Richard and Judie answering viewer's questions on surgical issues. He also had two TV shows of his own on the Health and Beauty satellite channel. His trademark was his ability to humanise and simplify the often terrifying world of surgery and operations as well as his array of colourful bow-ties!

Mike's two main hobbies are skiing and helicopter flying. He has had a helicopter pilot's licence for over 5 years and he says that this (not counting his now sadly departed Harley-Davidson motor cycle) was his main mid-life crisis!

On Thursday's Surgery Surgery show with presenter Mick Coyle Mike answers listeners' phone calls, texts and e-mails. His wide surgical experience allows him to answer most queries put to him, but when he feels that a question is outside his 'comfort zone' he will often direct callers in an appropriate direction or go away and find out a bit more about the subject so that he can answer the question the following week. Mike uses everyday language to answer questions and tries hard to avoid using medical jargon.

Mike is widely known throughout Merseyside both within the medical profession and in the wider population.
